Samuel A. Talcott

Samuel Austin Talcott (born December 31, 1789 in Hartford , Connecticut , † March 19, 1836 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

Samuel Austin Talcott, son of Abigail Ledyard and Samuel Talcott (1740–1798), was born in Hartford County about six years after the end of the Revolutionary War . His great grandfather was Joseph Talcott , governor of the Colony of Connecticut . Nothing is known about his youth. 1809, he graduated from Williams College in Williamstown ( Massachusetts ). He studied law at Gold & Sill's law firm . During this time he married his first wife Rachel Skinner on May 28, 1810. Her son was John Ledyard Talcott (* 1812), a judge on the New York Supreme Court. In 1812 he was admitted as a lawyer and then began in Lowville ( New York to practice). Four years later he moved to Utica, New York. In the following years he practiced in New Hartford (New York). In 1818 he married his second wife Mary Eliza Stanley (1800-1848). Her son was Thomas Grosvenor Talcott (1819-1870). Talcott was a senior executive in the Albany Regency. He was Attorney General of New York from 1821 to 1829 when he was forced to resign due to irregular habits. In the following years he became addicted to alcohol for a while. He then practiced as a lawyer in New York City.
