Samuel Beardsley

Samuel Beardsley (born February 6, 1790 in Hoosick , New York , † May 6, 1860 in Utica , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1831 and 1836 and between 1843 and 1844 .

Career

Samuel Beardsley was born and raised in Hoosick, Rensselaer County , approximately seven years after the War of Independence . He pursued an academic career. Beardsley taught at a school. He studied law in Rome . He served as a lieutenant during the British-American War and took part in the defense of Sackets Harbor in 1813 . He was admitted to the bar in 1815 and then began practicing in Watertown . He was a lawyer in the New York National Guard . In 1816 he returned to Rome, where he continued his practice as a lawyer. He was a prosecuting attorney in 1821 . In 1823 he was a member of the New York Senate . That same year he moved to Utica, Oneida County . Between 1823 and 1830 he was the successor of Jacob Sutherland United States Attorney for the northern district of New York .

Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction at that time . In the 1830 congressional elections for the 22nd Congress Beardsley was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Henry R. Storrs on March 4, 1831 . In 1832 he ran in the 17th electoral district of New York for the 23rd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded John W. Taylor on March 4, 1833 . He was re-elected, but resigned from his seat on March 29, 1836. During his last term ( 24th Congress ) he chaired the Committee on the Judiciary .

He was appointed district judge in 1836. Between 1836 and 1838 he was Attorney General of New York. In the following time he joined the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1842 for the 28th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 20th constituency of New York, where he succeeded Samuel Gordon on March 4, 1843 . Because of a judge's appointment, however, he resigned from his seat on February 29, 1844.

Beardsley became associate judge on the New York Supreme Court in 1844 . He worked there until 1847. Last year he was named Chief Justice . He declined another term and then went back to his practice as a lawyer. He died on May 6, 1860 in Utica. His body was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery . Civil war broke out about a year later .
