Henry Mitchell (politician)

Henry Mitchell (* 1784 in Woodbury , Connecticut , † January 12, 1856 in Norwich , New York ) was an American doctor and politician . Between 1833 and 1835 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Mitchell was born in Litchfield County about a year after the Revolutionary War ended . He studied Classics with private tutors and then graduated from Yale College Medical School in 1804 . After becoming a doctor, he began practicing in Norwich, Chenango County . In 1827 he was a member of the New York State Assembly .

Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction. In the 1832 congressional elections for the 23rd Congress , Mitchell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 21st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded John A. Collier on March 4, 1833 . He retired from the after March 3, 1835 Congress of.

After his time at Congress, he resumed his work as a doctor. He died in Norwich on January 12, 1856 and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery .
