Richard Edward Connell (born November 6, 1857 in Poughkeepsie , New York , † October 30, 1912 there ) was an American politician . In 1911 and 1912 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Richard Edward Connell was born in Dutchess County about four years before the outbreak of the Civil War . He attended St. Peter's Parochial School and public schools in Poughkeepsie. Between 1887 and 1910 he was a reporter and editor for the Poughkeepsie News Press . During this time he held the post of Poughkeepsie Police Commissioner in 1892. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In 1896 he ran unsuccessfully for the 55th Congress . In his candidacies in 1898 and 1900 for a seat in the New York State Assembly , he also suffered defeats. In 1900 and 1904 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in Kansas City and St. Louis . Between 1907 and 1909 he worked as an expert for inheritance tax.

In the 1910 congressional election for the 62nd Congress , Connell was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 21st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Hamilton Fish II on March 4, 1911 . He died before the end of his term on October 30, 1912 in Poughkeepsie. At the time of his death, he was already nominated as a Democratic candidate for the 63rd Congress . His body was buried in St. Peter's Cemetery .
