John Richards (politician, 1765)

John Richards (born April 13, 1765 in Llanuwchllyn , Wales , † April 18, 1850 in Lake George , New York ) was a Welsh- American politician . Between 1823 and 1825 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Richards was born about a month after the Stamp Act was passed in Llanuwchllyn near Bala in Gwynedd . The family immigrated to the United States and settled in Johnsburg , Warren County . There he received a modest schooling. He served in the New York State Assembly from January 29, 1811 to April 8, 1811 . Between 1810 and 1812 he was a state surveyor . As a delegate, he took part in the Constituent Assembly of New York in 1821 .

As a result of a fragmentation of the Democratic Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the Crawford faction. In the 1822 congressional elections for the 18th Congress , Litchfield was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Elisha Litchfield on March 4, 1823 .
