Richard Franchot

Richard Franchot (born June 2, 1816 in Morris , New York , † November 23, 1875 in Schenectady , New York) was an American politician . Between 1861 and 1863 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Richard Franchot was born in Morris, Otsego County , about a year after the end of the British-American War . He attended public schools, the Hartwick Academy and the Cherry Valley Academy. Then he studied civil engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy . He then served as President of the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad for several years . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the 1860 congressional elections for the 37th Congress , Franchot was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 19th constituency of New York , where he succeeded James H. Graham on March 4, 1861 . Since he on a run again in 1862 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1863 Congress of.

He moved to Schenectady. During the Civil War he raised the 121st  Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry . He received his officer license to colonel on August 23, 1862. A promotion to Brevet - Brigadier General of the United States Volunteers followed on March 13, 1865. After the end of the war he worked for the Central Pacific Railroad . He died on November 23, 1875 in Schenectady and was then buried in Vale Cemetery . His great-grandson was the actor Franchot Tone .
