Charles Dayan (born July 8, 1792 in Amsterdam , New York , † December 25, 1877 in Lowville , New York) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

Dayan became a teacher after graduating from Lowville Academy . He fought in the British-American War , where he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel . He then studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1817 and then practiced in Lowville.

He was a member of the New York Senate from 1827 to 1828 , where he represented the 5th District. During this time he was elected President pro Tempore . In this capacity he served from 17 October to 31 December 1828 Acting Deputy Governor ( Engl. Lieutenant governor ) of New York. Then he ran as a member of the Democratic Republican Party for the 22nd US Congress , where he worked from March 4, 1831 to March 3, 1833 after a successful election. After serving in the US House of Representatives , he was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1835 to 1836 .

Dayan served as the District Attorney in Lewis County from 1840 to 1845 . Due to his poor health, he then withdrew from public life, but continued to work as a lawyer. After his death he was buried in the Lowville Rural Cemetery .
