Alfred B. DelBello (born November 3, 1934 in Yonkers , New York , † May 15, 2015 in Waccabuc , New York) was an American politician of the Democratic Party .

Career

Alfred B. DelBello was Mayor of Yonkers from 1970 and the first Democrat to hold the post of Westchester County Executive before he was elected Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1982 . He won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor as running mate from Ed Koch , then mayor of New York City . Koch confirmed him as a running mate, believing he would help Koch with suburban voters. DelBello faced ambassador Carl McCall , the running mate of then Lieutenant Governor Mario Cuomo , in the Democratic primary .

DelBello won his primary, with Koch losing to Cuomo. Then came in the subsequent gubernatorial elections Cuomo and DelBello together and won the election. During their time together as governor and lieutenant governor, there was always little friction between them. During this time, DelBello concentrated entirely on his role as President of the New York Senate , but also pursued projects that he led in the way and Cuomo left him to him. These projects included civil protection , local government and economic development.

DelBello resigned as lieutenant governor in February 1985 on the grounds that he was bored with Cuomo not giving him enough to do. Then he went back to the private sector. He then ran unsuccessfully in 1994 for a seat in the New York Senate.

In December 2006, DelBello was appointed by the Westchester County Association , a business advocacy group, to head a Property Tax Reform Commission for the purpose of maintaining Westchester County's prosperity. He died of a fall on May 15, 2015 at his home in Waccabuc, New York.
