Robert John "Bob" Duffy (born August 21, 1954 in Rochester , New York ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was Lieutenant Governor of New York State from January 2011 to January 2015 under Governor Andrew Cuomo . He previously served as mayor of his hometown Rochester since 2006.

Life

Born in Rochester in 1954, Duffy began a course in crime science after graduating from high school in 1972. From 1976 he worked for the police in his city, where he was promoted to captain . In 1998 he was appointed head of the city police. After the previous Mayor of Rochester, William A. Johnson , announced in 2005 that he would not stand again and would retire, Duffy announced his candidacy for the office. After winning the election, he took it up at the beginning of 2006.

In the run-up to the 2010 gubernatorial elections , he was selected as a running mate by Democratic contender Andrew Cuomo for New York's highest office . Robert Duffy was consequently nominated by the Democrats and elected Lieutenant Governor of New York with Cuomo in November 2010 . The duo was able to prevail with 62% of the votes. Thomas S. Richards then took over the office of Mayor of Rochester. On January 1, 2011, Duffy was sworn in as Lieutenant Governor.

In May 2014, Duffy announced to the public that for health reasons he would not be available again as Andrew Cuomo's running mate in the November 2014 gubernatorial election . Governor Cuomo chose former Congressman Kathy Hochul as a candidate for the post of lieutenant governor, who replaced him at the turn of the year 2015.

Duffy has been married since 1986 and has two children.
