Matthew Linn Bruce
Matthew Linn Bruce (born October 1, 1860 in Mercersburg , Franklin County , Pennsylvania , † February 26, 1936 in Albany , Albany County , New York ) was an American lawyer, judge and politician ( Republican Party ).
Career
Matthew Linn Bruce attended Andes Academy . He graduated from Rutgers College in 1884 with a Bachelor of Arts , where he also gave the farewell speech. He then studied law in the law firm of Cassius M. Shaw in Andes, where he was admitted to the bar in 1889. Bruce moved to New York City in 1890 . He worked there as a senior clerk in the law firm of Hector M. Hitchings until 1892 , when he opened his own legal practice. Bruce became president of the New York County Republican Committee in 1903 . He also led an unsuccessful election campaign for Mayor Seth Low for re-election.
Bruce was Lieutenant Governor of New York between 1905 and 1906 . On his re-election attempt in November 1906, he suffered a defeat, although his running mate Charles Evans Hughes was elected governor . All other Republican candidates were defeated by the Democratic / Independence League nominees . On December 5, 1906, he resigned from his post as lieutenant governor. Governor Frank W. Higgins appointed him a judge at the New York Supreme Court to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Morgan J. O'Brien . Bruce held the post until late 1907. The following year he returned to his practice as a lawyer. However, he was reappointed to the Supreme Court on October 13 of the same year by Governor Hughes, this time to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge David Leventritt. Bruce held the position until the end of the year. In his candidacy in November 1908 for the same post at the Supreme Court, he suffered a defeat against the Democratic candidate Irving Lehman .

Matthew Linn Bruce was the son of James Bruce and Mary (Linn) Bruse (approx. 1830-1907). He married Lillian (Ballantine) Knapp in 1894. The couple had four children together.
