Milan Paumer (born April 7, 1931 in Kolín , † July 22, 2010 in Prague ) was a Czech activist and part of the anti-communist resistance in Czechoslovakia .

Life

After the war, Milan Paumer learned the trade of a machinist before studying at the engineering school in Kolín.

Since 1942 he was with the sons of General Josef Mašín , Ctirad and Josef jr. friends. After the Czechoslovak communists came to power in February 1948 , he participated with them in organizing and carrying out acts of sabotage and raids on police stations, in which police officers were also killed.

In 1952 Paumer began his military service and was transferred to the military academy in Martin , Slovakia .

He belonged to a group of five who decided in early October 1953 to emigrate to the west. After a dramatic 29-day escape through the GDR , he and the Mašín brothers managed to get to West Berlin , killing four police officers and seriously injuring two. Two members of the group, Zbyněk Janata and Václav Švéda , were arrested, extradited to Czechoslovakia and executed.

After his arrival in the USA , Paumer joined the anti-communist special unit CIC of the US Army , for which he was also deployed in the Korean War. After five years of service, he settled in Miami , Florida , where he worked as a maintenance technician in aircraft yards and as a taxi driver. In 1998 he retired as the owner of a taxi company.

After a Czech court of appeal had declared the Mašín Group's actions to be statute-barred in 1995, Paumer returned to the Czech Republic in 2001, where he took an active part in political events.
