Mary Donohue

Mary O'Connor Donohue (born March 22, 1947 in Troy , New York ) is an American politician and lawyer . From 1999 to 2006 she was Lieutenant Governor of New York State .

Career

Mary O'Connor, her maiden name, attended the College of New Rochelle and Russell Sage College in her hometown of Troy. For some time she taught as a teacher. After studying law at Albany Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1983, she began working in this profession. During her studies she also worked on the staff of State Senator Joseph Bruno . During the 1990s, she served as the district attorney in Rensselaer County . Between 1996 and 1998 she was a judge at the New York Supreme Court . Politically, she joined the Republican Party .

In 1998, Donohue was elected Lieutenant Governor of New York alongside George Pataki . She held this office after being re-elected between 1999 and 2006. She was Deputy Governor and Chairwoman of the State Senate. She has also been entrusted by the governor with the task of making proposals to end violence in schools. She was also a member of various government bodies and commissions. In 2006 she was under discussion as a candidate for the gubernatorial election. However, she declared that she was not going to run for such candidacy. After the end of her time as lieutenant governor, a nomination for federal judge failed due to the approval of the US Senate . Instead, she became a judge on the New York Court of Claims . She held this position between 2006 and her resignation in 2009. She has been retired since then.
