George Gilbert Hoskins

George Gilbert Hoskins (* 24. December 1824 in Bennington , Wyoming County , New York ; †  12. June 1893 in Attica , New York) was an American politician of the Republican Party . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives and was its Vice Governor .

After completing his school education, George Hoskins initially embarked on a professional career as a businessman. For many years he also acted in his hometown Bennington as town clerk , postmaster and justice of the peace.

His political career began in 1860 with the election to the New York State Assembly , the lower house of the state parliament. He was a member again from 1865 to 1866, and in 1865 he was the chamber's speaker . After moving to Attica, he was head of the city's bookkeeping from 1868 to 1870 ( Commissioner of public accounts ). On May 1, 1871, he was appointed chief tax officer in the 29th District of New York.

From 1873 to 1877, Hoskins served in the House of Representatives in Washington . He initially represented the 30th Congressional electoral  district of New York, then the 31st district in his second two-year term. In the attempt to re-elect, he was defeated by the Democrat Charles B. Benedict . In 1880 Hoskins was a delegate to the Republican National Convention ; in the same year he took over the office of lieutenant governor of New York, which he held for two years as deputy to Governor Alonzo B. Cornell . After that, Hoskins withdrew from politics.
