Silas Mainville Burroughs (born July 16, 1810 in Ovid , Seneca County , New York , †  June 3, 1860 in Medina , New York) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1860 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Silas Burroughs attended preparatory schools. In 1835 he was employed in the administration of the Medina Township in Orleans County . In 1836 and again from 1839 to 1843, he was the village trustee of this municipality. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1840, he began to work in this profession in Medina. Between 1845 and 1847 he was again mayor there. At the same time he also acted as the local legal representative. Burroughs was also a member of the New York State Militia. Between 1848 and 1858 he held the rank of brigadier general there. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1837, 1850, 1851, and 1853 .

In the 1850s, Burroughs joined the Republican Party, which was then formed . In the congressional election of 1856 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 31st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Thomas T. Flagler on March 4, 1857 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his death on June 3, 1860 . This time was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .
