Edwin Albert Merritt

Edwin Albert Merritt (born July 25, 1860 in Pierrepont , New York , † December 4, 1914 in Potsdam , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1912 and 1914 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edwin Albert Merritt was born in St. Lawrence County about nine months before the Civil War broke out . He attended community schools. Merritt graduated from Potsdam Normal School in 1879 and from Yale College in 1884 . In 1885 he was Deputy Consul General in London . After returning to the United States, he pursued various business ventures in Potsdam. Between 1896 and 1903 he served on the St. Lawrence County County Council. He studied law . After receiving his license to practice as a lawyer in 1902, he began to practice in Potsdam. Between 1902 and 1912 he sat in the New York State Assembly , where he was minority leader in 1908 and speaker in 1912 . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

He was elected to the 62nd Congress in a by-election in the 26th  constituency of New York to fill the vacancy created by the death of George R. Malby . He took his seat in the US House of Representatives on November 5, 1912. In the regular congressional election of 1912 for the 63rd Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 31st constituency of New York , where he succeeded Sereno E. Payne on March 4, 1913 . However, he died before the end of his term on December 4, 1914 in Potsdam. At the time of his death he was already elected to the 64th Congress . His body was buried in the Pierrepont Hill Cemetery in Pierrepont.
