Potsdam is a town in St. Lawrence County ( New York ) in the USA . At the 2010 census, Potsdam had 16,041 inhabitants; the postcode is 13676. The city is named after the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam .
The municipality of the same name is also located within the city of Potsdam . Potsdam is located in the center of the district, northeast of the district town of Canton .
history
The region was part of the extensive land purchase by Alexander Macomb, a merchant who got rich during the American Revolutionary War, which he acquired from the American state in 1791. This land purchase went down in history as the Macomb's Purchase .
David Clarkson and Garret van Horn made early investments in the city, which began to be colonized by white settlers around 1803. At that time, the pioneers still met Indians who lived there and who traded in fur .
The city of Potsdam was separated from the southern part of the city of Madrid in 1806 . Potsdam is one of the ten original founding cities of St. Lawrence County.
As a village settlement ( Villages ) to 1831, the villages of Potsdam and 1871 Raquetteville (under the name Potsdam Junction) founded. The latter is now called Norwood and is partly in the catchment areas of the cities of Potsdam and Norfolk .
The St. Lawrence Academy, predecessor of the State University of New York at Potsdam , was founded in 1816. Clarkson University was founded in 1896 .
The region around Potsdam is known for its reddish-orange Potsdam sandstone. A large plaque is in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC

According to the United States Census Bureau (USCB), the city of Potsdam has a total area of 267.9 km² , of which 262.8 km² is land and 5.2 km² (= 1.92%) is water.
The Raquette River runs through the center of Potsdam and flows northwards. The Grasse River flows through the northwestern part of the city.
The US Highway 11 and the New York State Route 11B are east-west connections. The New York State Route 56 runs as a north-south road through the city. The New York State Route 345 runs from northwest to southeast, crossing the New York State Route 310 in the northwest corner of the city.
