George Arthur Mathews

George Arthur Mathews (born June 4, 1852 in Potsdam , New York , †  April 19, 1941 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician .

Mathews graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette and later attended the University of Iowa Law School in Iowa City . In 1878 he was accepted into the bar and practiced in Corning . A year later he moved to the city of Brookings in the Dakota Territory (now South Dakota ) and continued to practice there.

In 1884, Mathews was the District Attorney for the Fifth Judicial District in the Dakota Territory. He was elected as a Republican to the 51st  Congress , where he represented the Dakota Territory as a delegate from March 4, 1889 to November 2, 1889, when the territory was converted into a state , in the US House of Representatives . He was Mayor of Brookings from 1897 to 1903 and then went back to his old profession. In 1910, Mathews retired and moved to Los Angeles. He died there in 1941. His ashes were buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings.
