The Baden-Württemberg Economic Archive ( WABW ) is the central archive for sources from Baden-Württemberg's economic life.

history

The archive was founded in 1980 as a joint institution of the chambers of industry and commerce and the state at the University of Hohenheim . To date, with around 10,000 running meters, it has taken over the archivable documents of over 450 companies, chambers of industry and commerce, chambers of crafts, associations and private individuals, making it one of the largest regional economic archives in Europe.

The economic archive is a foundation under private law. The foundation bodies consist of a board of directors, a board of trustees and a scientific advisory board. They include executives from politics, business, administration, science and the church.

tasks

The central task is the preservation, development and provision of historically valuable written material from business life. By collecting written material and other documentation, the archive secures information and acts as a data storage medium for research, for the donating companies and for the public.

At the beginning of the practical archive work, there is the acquisition , viewing, cassation and takeover of the holdings. Then they are cleaned, restored, packed for archiving and stored in a magazine to ensure they are permanent. A prerequisite for using the holdings is their indexing and the creation of finding aids. Archive users can obtain comprehensive information about the holdings via printed repertories (finding aids) or databases as the result of the detailed listing. The professional processing of the archived material is not only useful to science and the public, but also to the transferring companies, who only then can use their archive for their daily work.

Duration

A range from the areas of economic and social life is collected and processed here. The stocks include old advertising posters, rare catalogs, photos from the world of work, but also design drafts, technical drawings, balance sheets, statistics, contracts, payrolls and much more.

With its broad spectrum, this treasure trove of economic and social historical documents forms a comprehensive picture of the social, economic and cultural conditions over four centuries.

collaboration

The archive works closely with the universities and other academic institutions in the state, stimulates research on the history of the south-west of Germany with a focus on economic and social history, and has set up its own series for this purpose. Since many holdings offer a wide range of information from economic and social-historical as well as current economic and business topics to art, technology or cultural history, the economic archive is a central advice center for science with its diverse sub-disciplines. In addition, it sees itself as an information and information point for exhibitions, media and schools. In addition to the archive holdings, the specialist library, which comprises almost 50,000 volumes, offers extensive information on the economic and social history of southwest Germany.
