Walter A. Burleigh

Walter Atwood Burleigh (born October 25, 1820 in Waterville , Maine , † March 7, 1896 in Yankton , South Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he represented the Dakota Territory in the US House of Representatives as a delegate .

Early years

Walter Burleigh attended public schools in his home country. In 1839 he took part in the Aroostook War as a soldier . He then studied in Burlington ( Vermont ) and New York City Medicine . After his successful graduation, he initially started in Richmond (Maine) and after a move in Kittanning ( Pennsylvania to work as a doctor). At that time he also began to study law. Around 1861 he moved to the Dakota Territory, where he was active as an Indian commissioner in what is now Tripp County (South Dakota).

Burleigh in Congress

Burleigh became a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1864 he was elected as a delegate to Congress against incumbent John Blair Smith Todd of the Democratic Party . There he completed two legislative terms between March 4, 1865 and March 3, 1869. In the elections of 1868 he was no longer nominated and his mandate fell to Solomon L. Spink .

Another résumé

After his return from the federal capital Washington , Burleigh first devoted himself to his private interests. In 1877 he became a member of the Territorial Government Council of the Dakota Territory. In 1879 he moved to Miles City , Montana , where he practiced as a lawyer. In 1887 he was a member of the local government council and in 1889 he was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Montana. He was then a member of the first session of the Montana House of Representatives . From 1889 to 1890 he was a district attorney in Custer County . He then returned to South Dakota and became a member of the State Senate . He also worked as a lawyer. Walter Burleigh died in Yankton in 1896. The Burleigh County in North Dakota is named after him.
