Yankton is a city in the US state of South Dakota and the county seat of Yankton County .
geography
According to the 2010 census, the city had a population of 14,454 on 20.7 km². The city is located on the Missouri River , which forms the border with the state of Nebraska . The city's population is growing, albeit well below the South Dakota average. For 2013, the population is estimated at 14,591, an increase of 0.9 percent from the 2010 census. Across South Dakota, however, it was a solid 3.8 percent.
The city is also known by the nicknames River City and Key City . Just before the city is the Gavins Point Dam . The reservoir is called Lewis and Clark Lake , after the famous Lewis and Clark expedition .
Five kilometers north of the city is the Chan Gurney Municipal Airport , a regional airport named after John Chandler Gurney .
history
The area of what is now the city of Yankton came to the United States in 1803 through the Louisiana Purchase and was explored the following year by the Lewis and Clark Expedition . By the Yankton Treaty Dakota was released for settlement in 1859 and in 1861 to the Dakota Territory , the main town of which was Yankton until 1883.
In 1943 the largest radio tower in the world was built in Yankton by the radio station WNAX . It was used, among other things, to be able to broadcast the traveling radio show Missouri Valley Barn Dance constantly.
Sports
In 2015, the World Archery Federation's youth world championships took place in the Easton Yankton Archery Complex in Yankton, followed by the indoor world championships in 2018 . Various world archery championships are also planned in the municipality for 2020 (world championships in field archery) and 2021 (world championships in open air).
