Charles Donald "Sam" Gemar (born August 4, 1955 in Yankton , South Dakota ) is a former American astronaut .
education
Gemar received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the United States Military Academy in 1979 . In 1973 Gemar joined the US Army and received his pilot's license there in 1980.
Astronaut activity
In June 1985, Gemar was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA .
STS-38
Gemar started on November 15, 1990 as a mission specialist on the space shuttle Atlantis for its first flight into space . A military spy satellite was deployed as a payload on behalf of the US Department of Defense .
STS-48
On September 12, 1991 Gemar started as a mission specialist with the space shuttle Discovery . During this five-day mission, the UARS satellite was deployed to explore the Earth's upper atmosphere . The 6.5 ton satellite performed one of the most detailed studies of the earth's atmosphere, including the ozone layer.
STS-62
On March 4, 1994 Gemar started as a mission specialist with the space shuttle Columbia for his third space flight . The payload was the United States Microgravity Payload 2 (USMP) and Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology 2 (OAST). With these payloads, the effects of weightlessness could be researched.

Since July 1998 Gemar has been Head of Flight Test Operations & Safety at the Bombardier Flight Test Center in Wichita , Kansas .
