Adam Matthew Vinatieri (* 28. December 1972 in Yankton , South Dakota ) is an American American football poker players on the position of the Kickers . He plays with the Indianapolis Colts in the National Football League (NFL).

Because of his game-changing kicks in two Super Bowls , he is considered one of the best kickers in NFL history. In the 4th week of the 2018 season, he scored his 566th field goal in the game against the Houston Texans, overtaking previous NFL record holder Morten Andersen . On matchday 10, he also beat Andersen's record of 2544 points.

Until the 2005 season he played for the New England Patriots in four Super Bowls, among other things, of which he and his team won three and he scored the decisive field goal in the last seconds of victories in Super Bowl XXXVI and Super Bowl XXXVIII . Therefore, there is speculation whether Vinatieri will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as soon as possible (five years after the end of his career) , where currently only two other kickers, Jan Stenerud and Morten Andersen , have a place. Vinatieri is a third cousin of Evel Knievel .

High school and college

Vinatieri went to 1991 to the Central High School of Rapid City in South Dakota. At that time he was interested not only in football, but also in soccer and wrestling . In the year of his graduation, he became the first high school player to be named best kicker in the state.

After high school, he was originally from the Army recruited to play in college the Army football. However, he only stayed here for a few weeks and then moved "home" to South Dakota State University . In addition to his position as a kicker, Vinatieri was also used as a punter . He left college in 1995 with a score of 185, which is the highest score for a kicker at university. His younger brother Beau played table football at Black Hills State University until he graduated in 2003.

Life as a professional

In Europe

After Vinatieri was fired from college in 1995, he got a contract from the Amsterdam Admirals from NFL Europe - initially still as a kicker and punter.

In the USA

After only good performances with the Admirals, the Patriots signed Vinatieri in 1996 as a kicker. In his first season as an NFL professional, he came straight to the Super Bowl ( XXXI ), which the Patriots lost to the Green Bay Packers 35:21 .

During the next few years, Vinatieri matured more and more to become a top performer. In the play-offs of the 2001 season, he first scored the equalizing 13:13 during a blizzard against the Oakland Raiders and later in overtime also 16:13 and thus the sudden death for the Raiders. The first kick from 45 yards is considered one of the most spectacular and best kicks ever seen on a football field due to the wind and heavy snowfall.

Vinatieri played the decisive role in the Super Bowls XXXVI and XXXVIII . With the first success he shot from 48 yards into the goal of the St. Louis Rams at 20:17 when the clock was running out . This success is controversial, especially among the supporters of the Rams, as the music box continued to run after the ball passed the goal posts, although it should have been stopped. So the Rams would have two seconds left to start their own play and to keep the small chance of victory.

Two years later it came to almost exactly the same situation when the Patriots faced the Carolina Panthers and it was 29:29 a few seconds before the end. Vinatieri sank from 41 yards. With these two actions, Adam Vinatieri is the first kicker who was the key figure for the outcome of the game in two Super Bowls. Another year later, the Patriots scored another success in the Super Bowl, but Vinatieri did not have to shoot here shortly before the end.

After the 2005 season, the Patriots fired Vinatieri as a free agent . He stayed that way until March 22, 2006, when he was signed by the Indianapolis Colts for five years. He received $ 3.5 million just for signing the contract. There he won the Super Bowl XLI with the Colts , in which he scored three field goals and two points after touchdown .

Trivia

In the 2004 season he also showed qualities as a quarterback when he threw a touchdown in a season game against the St. Louis Rams in a fake play on wide receiver Troy Brown . That one pass from four yards gives him a quarterback rating of 122.9.

Vinatieri also has the reputation of playing defender at kickoffs , unlike most other kickers . During his first ten years he was solely responsible for 20 tackles , and teammates helped him with seven others.

Vinatieri has been called up to the Pro Bowl three times so far , namely in 2002, 2004 and 2014. He is a member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team .
