Troy Fitzgerald Brown (born July 2, 1971 in Barnwell , South Carolina ) is a retired American football player . Brown attended Marshall University . He plays on the position of the wide receiver , the cornerback , the punt returner , the kick returner and rarely also on the position of the quarterback . He has been with the New England Patriots since 1993 and has been in all three Super Bowl victories and one defeat. On September 25, 2008, he retired.

Career

In the eighth round of the 1993 NFL Draft , Brown was selected by the Patriots. At these times he played the third or fourth wide receiver and was considered a very good special team player. In the 1993 and 1994 seasons he was mainly used as a punt returner. In 1997 Brown caught 41 passes, scoring 607  yards and six touchdowns . The following year he played again as a punt returner. When Brown was used again as a wide receiver in 2000, he caught 83 passes, ran 944 yards and scored four touchdowns. In 2001 he caught 101 passes, ran 1,199 yards, and scored five touchdowns. He also ran back 29 punts and made two punt return touchdowns. His achievements that season made him elected to the Pro Bowl for the first time .

He made a total of 246 pun returns, ran 2,570 yards and scored three punt return touchdowns. Troy Brown has the highest number of pass catches in Patriots history, 557 total, and the second highest number of yards caught, 6,366.
