Super Bowl XXXVIII Backgrounds

Super Bowl XXXVIII was the first NFL final to be played in a stadium that had a retractable roof. This roof was closed during the game and shows. For the Carolina Panthers it was the first participation in a Super Bowl , they also went into this game as a clear underdog. Head Coach John Fox concentrated on stopping the running game of other teams and pushing their own running game, which went well during the season, they finished the season with an 11: 5 record and first place in their division. After their victory in Super Bowl XXXVI , the New England Patriots managed to make it back to the final two years later, with a record of 14: 2, the top spot in the division and a remarkable winning streak of 14 games in a row.

Scoring

Course of the game

First halftime

In the first quarter mainly punts were exchanged. The Patriots did not take advantage of the opportunity to take the lead, as Vinatieri kicked a field goal . Even a conquered fumble by Jake Delhomme did not lead to any points. The Panthers Blockley at the beginning of the second quarter another field goal attempt by Adam Vinatieri, thus preventing in arrears to fall. Then the offenses began to work, the first score was a pass from Brady to Branch, the equalizer was a pass from Delhomme to Smith. New England raised with another touchdown pass and Carolina came up to 14-10 with a field goal in the last second from 50 yards.

Second halftime

The third quarter remained, like the first, without points, but the New England Patriots increased to 21-10 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. After a touchdown to 21-16, the Patriots got into the Panthers Red Zone , but Brady threw his first interception in a Super Bowl into the end zone and gave the Panthers the chance to take the lead. This also happened with the longest (offensive) play in the history of Super Bowl, an 85-yard pass from Jake Delhomme to Muhsin Muhammad . After that, both teams scored one more touchdown each and it looked like the teams would go into the first extra time in Super Bowl history. But Vinatieri turned one last field goal and kicked the Patriots to their second Super Bowl triumph.

Halftime show scandal

Main article: Nipplegate

During the "halftime show" there were uncomfortable scenes for the broadcaster when Janet Jackson's wardrobe dissolved under the influence of Justin Timberlake and her right breast could be seen. This "wardrobe malfunction" led to innumerable complaints from American television viewers and subsequently caused some programs to be broadcast a few seconds later so that they could intervene if necessary.
