Nipplegate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nipplegate describes the appearance of Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake during the halftime break of the 38th Super Bowl on February 1, 2004, which was presented by the music channel MTV , which was perceived by most of the US media as a scandal . Jackson's right breast was exposed. The name was chosen based on the Watergate affair and the expression nipple (Eng .: nipple, nipple ).

The usual term for such "slip-ups" by female celebrities is Breast Blitzer ( English wardrobe malfunction, nipple slip, nip slip ).

The process

Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake performed a jointly sung version of Timberlake's song Rock Your Body during hiatus . The stage show included a number of lewd movements, which are nothing special in live shows and video clips in the US either. When both reached the last line of the text, "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song," Timberlake Janet Jackson tore part of her costume with a jerky movement, revealing her chest. A nipple piercing with a sun- shaped nipple shield came to light.

The consequences

The incident caused a scandal in the United States . Many viewers called the broadcasting television company CBS and complained about the "indecent exposure". Jackson and Timberlake then apologized and stated that it was only an accident and that the incident had not been discussed on this scale. CBS, MTV and the National Football League (NFL) also expressed their regrets. In an interview, Jackson later admitted that Timberlake had planned to tear off part of her black corsage . According to a spokeswoman for Janet Jackson, Timberlake ripped off the bra that Janet was wearing under her top and that was originally supposed to cover everything.

The NFL announced that MTV would never participate in the presentation of the halftime show.

In September 2004, the state broadcasting regulator , the FCC , filed a fine of $ 550,000 against MTV and CBS parent company Viacom . In July 2008, the investigation into CBS was closed without payment of a fine. After the incident, the US Congress voted for a significant increase in the FCC's fines for immoral television content. The ongoing proceedings against Viacom were discontinued at the end of 2004 after settlement payments of $ 3.5 million.

In order to be able to intervene in the event of similar incidents in the future, the major television stations in the USA decided to delay the broadcast of the Grammys and Oscar awards by a few seconds. Since then, the Super Bowl has also been broadcast on television with a five-second delay.

Jackson was instrumental in popularizing her piercing in the United States - sales skyrocketed.
