Nippleshield
A nipple shield is a piece of jewelry that can be worn in conjunction with a nipple piercing .
There are various forms. Often nipple shields are round or semicircular and cover the areola . They do not represent piercings themselves, but since they are only worn in connection with such, they are counted as piercing jewelry .
This jewelry gained greater fame through an incident during the 2004 Super Bowl in the USA . When Janet Jackson's chest was exposed during a performance , she wore a nipple shield around her nipple piercing. It was also this jewelry that saved her from prosecution, since in the USA the public showing of the uncovered female breast is illegal under penalty. Due to the shield, however, the chest was not considered uncovered. The incident became known as the Nipplegate scandal .
