‣ Topic  overview

The nipple piercing is through the nipple stung or the areola piercing that both women can be worn by men. It is mostly stabbed horizontally or vertically, but it can be arranged as desired. In principle it is also possible to pierce several piercings on top of each other; these are then usually arranged orthogonally .

The main motive for a nipple piercing is often the aesthetic stimulus, in addition, the piercing often leads to an increase in sensitivity and can be used for stimulation. The nipple piercing can be found in different cultures. The demand for the piercing has increased in recent years.

history

Historical development

Modern Primitive Subculture Woman in a California Forest, 1993

Nipple piercings are said to be found in the men of the Karankawa tribe (on the Gulf of Mexico ) and in the women of the Kabyle , a Berber tribe in northern Algeria .

The earliest European reports of nipple piercing for the attachment of jewelry date back to the mid-14th century. At this time, dresses with a very deep cleavage were popular among aristocratic women, who increasingly exposed the breasts down to the nipples. Soon afterwards, a fashion, founded by Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria (Isabeau) , in which the exposed nipples were adorned with diamond rings or gold chains, is said to have emerged.

A few centuries later, in the Victorian era around 1890, so-called Anneaux de Seins came into fashion in Paris and London - breast jewelry attached to a piercing. As a rule, this was very valuable and was again primarily distributed among the upper class. However, there is no robust historical evidence for any of these reports.

In the 1970s, piercing became known again through the Gauntlet in Los Angeles , a studio and meeting place, as well as the magazine PFIQ , but initially only in the piercing scene . In the 1980s and 1990s, the so-called Modern Primitive Movement contributed to further spreading, taking over cultural elements of indigenous peoples in the context of youth and alternative culture , which for a long time were considered “primitive” in the western world.

The current trend is relatively young and has only existed for a few years. Today's popularity and presence in the media were promoted by numerous stars and celebrities such as Lenny Kravitz and Tommy Lee , who first brought the general public into contact with piercing in the late 1990s. Janet Jackson was wearing a nipple shield when her chest was exposed by Justin Timberlake at the 2004 Superbowl . The incident later became controversial under the name of the Nipplegate scandal. Jackson was instrumental in popularizing piercing in the United States. Nicole Richie , actress and adopted daughter of Lionel Richie, triggered an alarm with her nipple piercing at the airport in Reno (Nevada) during a security check , whereupon she had to show the security officers her piercings in a separate room. Britney Spears , herself a nipple piercing, persuaded the majority of her crew to have a nipple pierced at a Valentine's Day party. Rihanna and Cassie , contemporary R&B singers , had nipple piercings in quick succession in 2008. Jennifer Bongardt , a German canoeist, wore nipple piercings on both sides during a Playboy photoshoot in 2007. Other female celebrities with nipple piercings include Agyness Deyn , Freja Beha Erichsen , Kylie Jenner , Rooney Mara , Candice Swanepoel, and Kristen Stewart . For example, Neil Patrick Harris , Lenny Kravitz and Tim Roth wear nipple piercings among the men . (see also: Portal: Body Modification / Celebrities with Piercings )

According to a survey of piercers from Switzerland , the nipple piercing has now replaced the navel piercing as the most popular body piercing. According to a 2002 study, five percent of undergraduate students in the United States had a nipple piercing, and the number is rising.

"In the USA, the piercing on the nipple is one of the most popular customer requests."

- The Upper Baden, 2014

A survey carried out in 2005 among a representative sample of the general population in Great Britain found that nipple piercings are more common than labret or eyebrow piercings , and that it is the most common piercing in men To see fashion shows .

Implementation and healing

Performing a nipple piercing: fixing the point to be pierced, piercing with a hollow needle, attaching the jewelry (from left to right)

As with other piercings, the skin area to be pierced is first disinfected . Then the puncture and puncture points are marked, fixed with a piercing clamp and pierced with a special needle .

It takes about one to six months to heal (usually four to six weeks). With a newly pierced piercing, tight clothing should not be worn and the ring should not be replaced until it has healed completely, in order to avoid friction and not put additional strain on the tissue. Getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding stress can speed healing.

It is also recommended not to use rings as initial jewelry, as these naturally always turn or move in the stitch channel. The solid scab that forms at the entry and exit points also complicates the healing process. Ointments such as Vaseline or Bepanthen with a sufficiently large plaster over them prevent encrustation. In order to prevent irritation, the use of a PTFE barbell with balls at both ends has proven effective. This keeps the mechanical load to a minimum.

Usually a barbell or ball closure ring is used. The jewelry should have a material thickness of at least 1.6 millimeters to prevent it from growing out. Rings with a diameter of less than one centimeter exert a strong mechanical stimulus due to their large curvature and thus cause an increased risk of inflammation.

For additional decoration, round ornaments fixed with the piercing, so-called nipple shields , are often worn. A haute couture dress was designed by the French fashion designer Thierry Mugler , the straps of which did not run over the shoulders, but were attached to ball closure rings.

Like many other piercings, the nipple piercing can be stretched and jewelry with a larger diameter can be used.

Nipple piercings while breastfeeding

Despite the fear of many women that they will no longer be able to breastfeed an infant with a nipple piercing , there are usually no complications. However, it is recommended that you take good care of the piercing and clean it to avoid infection.

During breastfeeding, the jewelry should be removed to avoid swallowing and a possible risk of suffocation and to make suckling easier for the baby.

Piercings that are pierced too often can damage the nipple and cause complications.

Many piercers generally advise against piercing during pregnancy because piercing puts unnecessary stress on the body, which in turn can cause complications during pregnancy.

Correction of nipples with a nipple piercing

The term inverted nipples is used to describe nipples that point inward. This can cause problems with breastfeeding , or it can be seen as an aesthetic problem. Nipple piercings can be used to correct inverted nipples.

Nipple piercings and silicone implants

With a nipple piercing there is usually no impairment of a silicone implant. However, when the implants are removed, as with other operations, it is prescribed to remove the piercings beforehand.

Risks

The same precautions should be taken when piercing the nipple as with most other piercings. If these are adhered to, which is usually the case in professional studios, the risks are relatively low. In rare cases, mastitis can occur if the hygienic conditions are inadequate . Treatment for this bacterial breast infection usually involves removing the piercing and giving antibiotics .

Poor hygiene during the healing period can also lead to breast abscesses .

Growing out nipple piercing

If the jewelry material is too thin or the piercing canal is not deep enough, the piercing can grow out of the nipple and leave permanent scars.

Larger jewelry can sometimes show through the clothing, which is why, for fashion and erotic reasons, tight clothing is often worn to emphasize this effect. In contrast, jewelry with smaller spherical thicknesses is chosen to avoid this.
