Nicole Camille Richie (born September 21, 1981 in Berkeley , California ) is an American actress and an It girl . She is the adopted daughter of Lionel Richie and became known on the side of Paris Hilton through the reality show The Simple Life .

Life

Richie was born to Peter Michael Escovedo , the brother of Sheila E. , and is the granddaughter of jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo . The musician, who was heavily dependent on alcohol and other drugs at the time, played in Lionel Richie's backing band and often took his daughter with him to rehearsals, performances and recordings. Lionel Richie, who was aware of his musician's addiction, asked the biological father to hand over the child into his care. Nicole moved to the Richie family at the age of three. Six years later, Escovedo agreed to an adoption.

Richie has been friends with Paris Hilton since she was a child and attended Buckley School in Sherman Oaks , California with her . Nicole Richie had her first experiences with alcohol and other drugs at the age of 13. In 2003 she was charged with driving without a license and drug possession . As a result of the trial, Nicole Richie voluntarily went into rehab . On December 11, 2006, the police stopped her while she was driving under the influence of drugs and was sentenced to four days in prison on July 27, 2007. She was serving her sentence on August 23, 2007 for 82 minutes at the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood .

Richie became known with the globally successful series The Simple Life , in which she was seen alongside Paris Hilton from December 2003.

In mid-2005, Richie hit the headlines again when she started working as a model . The US media suspected that Richie had an eating disorder because she looked extremely emaciated in photos. Richie emphasized again and again that her weight loss was due to stress and not due to illness or drugs. It was only recently that Richie admitted that she was considerably underweight and started working with a nutritionist.

She has been with Joel Madden, the singer of the American punk band Good Charlotte , since the end of 2006 . The two have been married since December 11, 2010 and are parents of two children.

In addition to numerous television appearances, Nicole Richie tried her hand as an actress. She starred in the feature film Kids in America and had guest appearances on television series such as Chuck , 8 Simple Rules , Rock Me Baby , Eve and American Dreams . In 2005, Richie published the novel The Truth About Diamonds . In 2005 she won the Young Hollywoods Style Icon Award from Hollywood Style Awards and in 2008 the Golden Pacifier Award from Babytalk Magazine. In June 2008, Richie's first jewelry collection, House of Harlow 1960 , named after her daughter, was released. Her second novel, Priceless , was published in September 2010 .
