The New Hainewalde Castle is located in the Saxon community of Hainewalde . It is owned by the neighboring community of Großschönau . The Hainewalder Schlossverein strives for the preservation and sustainable usage concepts as well as the tourist marketing of the building.

history

In the immediate vicinity of today's palace complex was a knight's seat surrounded by a moat, which was mentioned in 1392 as being owned by Nicolaus diclus de Warnsdorf.

The old moated castle was replaced in 1564 by Hans Ulrich von Nostitz with a renaissance castle , the so-called old castle . It was a four-wing complex that enclosed an inner courtyard. The facade was richly decorated with illusionistic decorations in sgraffito technique. Due to dilapidation, the old castle was demolished in 1780. Only the wing of the gatehouse remained and was used as a courthouse and prison until 1857. It is privately owned and not accessible to the public (as of 2014). The coat of arms above the portal is reminiscent of the von Nostitz family.

The royal Prussian chamberlain Samuel Friedrich von Kanitz had today's palace complex ( New Palace ) built in the Baroque style in the vicinity of the Old Palace from 1749 to 1755 . The location of the New Castle , which was built in the Mandau valley slope, is remarkable . A five-step terrace system leads from the valley floor to the main building of the castle. The main portal is supported by Tuscan columns, the keystone shows the double coat of arms of the von Kanitz and von Kyaw families. Two side wings form a forecourt to the main building. The castle garden on the hillside was also designed with a garden pond, hedges, walls, gardening, orangery and several pavilions in the Baroque style.

In 1781, due to multiple lightning strikes, the castle was one of the first buildings in Upper Lusatia to have a lightning rod . This can also be seen on the historical view of the castle from 1840.

In 1882/83 extensive redesign work was carried out according to plans by the Zittau architect Hugo Müller, during which the baroque forms were largely lost. The facade received a sgraffito painting.

In 1927 Moritz Joachim Ernst von Kyaw sold the castle to the community of Großschönau. From March 26 to August 10, 1933, the castle served as a protective custody camp at Hainewalde and from 1933 to 1945 as a military training camp .

Until 1972 it was still partially used as a residential building, from 1972 to 2004 it was empty. In 2000 the “Friends of the Kanitz-Kyaw Castle Hainewalde e. V. ”, through which the renovation of the east wing began in 2007.

In 2013 part of the film Grand Budapest Hotel was shot in Hainewalde Castle .

During the gradual restoration of the castle on June 24th, 2020, the new lantern built according to the old model was placed on the building. The old tower hood was removed about 23 years earlier because it was crooked and threatened to break in. On the north side of the castle, the roof on the extension, which had already been broken down and only temporarily covered with sheet metal, was renewed. The sgraffito work on the north extension was partly completely renewed or restored. Among other things, the window arches, the corner quarding, parapet ornaments, the mirror surfaces with scrollwork (cartouches) and 6 coats of arms (three each from the von Döringk family and three from the Kyaw family) were newly manufactured or restored. The plaster of the castle was renewed, the facade received a frame. The municipality invested 800,000 euros in the renovation, 90 percent of which was subsidies.

tourism

Castle tours are offered regularly. A castle festival takes place every one to two years and the castle association takes part in the annual day of the open monument . In addition, a palace calendar and other memorabilia were issued by the palace association.
