Reno is the fourth largest city in the US state of Nevada . The Reno region comprises Washoe County with a total of around 420,000 inhabitants, 245,000 of which (according to the US Census Bureau 2016 estimate ) in the city itself.

Reno is 1,371 meters above sea level in the Truckee River valley on the western edge of the Great Basin at the foot of the ascent into the Sierra Nevada and near the California border . In the northeast, the municipality of Sparks joins and forms a single urban agglomeration with Reno .
Reno is divided into eight boroughs (Northvalley, Northeast, Northwest, Old Northwest, Ward 1, Ward 2 South, Ward 2 Central, and Ward 3), which are headed by neighborhood advisory boards .
About 50 km to the southwest is Lake Tahoe , about 60 km to the northwest of Pyramid Lake .
Neighboring towns are clockwise from the north: Lemmon Valley-Golden Valley , Sun Valley , Sparks , Hidden Valley , Steamboat , Incline Village-Crystal Bay , Verdi-Mogul (all in Washoe County), Verdi Sierra Pines ( Sierra County , California), Verdi Mogul, Cold Springs, and Stead (again, all of Washoe County). Neighboring cities are Carson City , Fallon , Sparks , Virginia City, and Winnemucca .

The area around Reno was between 2500 BC. Inhabited by the Martis until 500 AD . In the 1850s, the first settlers settled here, who, besides some agriculture, lived mainly from migrating settlers on the way to California . In 1869 the Central Pacific built the first trans-American railway line along the old settlers' path . In the course of the railway construction, Reno was officially founded on May 9, 1868, a depot was built there. It was named after Jesse L. Reno , a Northern general in the American Civil War who fell at the Battle of South Mountain . The city experienced a continuous boom that became a boom in 1931 with the legalization of gambling in Nevada.

Education and religion
Reno is the seat of the oldest university in the US state of Nevada, the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), founded in 1874 . The city is the seat of the diocese of Reno .
Gambling
Today gambling is the city's main industry. Compared to Las Vegas , however, everything here is "one size smaller". This is also reflected in the self-description "The Biggest Little City In The World". The tallest building in Reno is the Silver Legacy Hotel and Casino . It is 125 meters high, has 38 floors and was built in 1995.

Divorce Paradise
Since the 1930s, Reno has had a reputation for being a "quick divorce haven". Unlike gambling, the divorce business became less important in later years as other states in the United States eased legal requirements for divorce.
