Brown is known for his books in the genre techno thriller or military thriller. He himself served in the US Air Force for seven years and flew as a navigator on FB-111 and B-52 . After he resigned from the Air Force in 1987, he wrote his first book Höllenfracht ("Flight of the Old Dog"), the first of his Patrick McLanahan series. The main actor is Patrick Shane McLanahan, who starts as a lieutenant in the US Air Force and rises to 3 star general, and from Starfire his son Brad.
Brown's numerous books have almost all been translated into German. Twelve of his titles reached the top spot on the New York Times bestseller list .
In 2005 Brown wrote the story of the computer game Act of War: Direct Action developed by Eugen Systems . The main character of the game Jason Richter and the elite unit Talon will also play a role in several of his next novels.
