David Wise (born June 30, 1990 in Reno , Nevada ) is an American freestyle skier . He starts in the halfpipe discipline .

Career

Wise has been participating in FIS competitions since 2004 . He made his World Cup debut in the 2008/09 season in Park City , which he finished in 12th place. At the Freestyle Skiing World Championships 2009 in Inawashiro , he finished fourth. Also in the season he won the Aspen / Snowmass Open in Aspen and achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup with second place in La Plagne . In the 2010/11 season he won the Pipe Open Series in Northstar-at-Tahoe and took second and third place at the World Cup in La Plagne. At the 2011 Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Park City , he was again fourth. At the AFP World Tour Finals in Whistler he reached third place and ended the season in fourth place in the AFP World Tour halfpipe rating.

At the beginning of the following season, Wise won the bronze medal at the New Zealand Winter Games in Cardrona . In the further course of the season he came in second place at the New Zealand Freeski Open in Cardrona and in first place at the Winter Dew Tour in Snowbasin . At the Winter X Games 2012 in Aspen , he won the gold medal in the superpipe competition. In March 2012 he won his first World Cup victory in Mammoth and thus achieved first place in the Halfpipe World Cup. In the same month he won bronze at the Winter X Games Europe 2012 in Tignes . In the AFP World Tour halfpipe evaluation he came in second place.

In the 2012/13 World Cup season, Wise finished third in Copper Mountain and first in Park City . As in the previous year, he won the gold medal at the Winter X Games 2013 . In March 2013 he became world champion on the halfpipe at the Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Oslo . In the same month he won silver at the Winter X Games Europe in Tignes . He finished the season in third place in the Halfpipe World Cup and first place in the AFP World Tour halfpipe rating. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season he won the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge . In the further course of the season he took his third World Cup victory. At the Winter X Games 2014 in Aspen , he won the gold medal in the superpipe competition for the third time in a row. At his first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014 , he became the first Olympic champion in the first ever halfpipe competition. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Wise won the World Cup in Copper Mountain . This was followed by a second place in Tignes and a third place in Park City . He finished the season in sixth place in the overall World Cup and first place in the Halfpipe World Cup.

In the 2015/16 season, Wise finished eighth at the Winter X Games 2016 and fourth at the X Games Oslo 2016 . He also won the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge and finished second at the World Cup in Mammoth . The following year he came 11th at the Winter X Games 2017 and fourth at the Freestyle Skiing World Championships 2017 in Sierra Nevada . In the 2017/18 season he won the World Cups in Copper Mountain and Snowmass , finishing eighth in the overall World Cup and second place in the Halfpipe World Cup. The Winter X Games 2018 in Aspen and the Winter Olympics in 2018 in Pyeongchang he each took the gold medal. The following season he finished fourth in the Mammoth, third in Copper Mountain and first in Calgary, 18th place in the overall World Cup and third place in the Halfpipe World Cup. He won silver at the Winter X Games 2019 and finished seventh at the 2019 World Championships in Park City . The following year he was seventh at the Winter X Games .

Wise became the American halfpipe champion in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011.
