Cardrona is a small settlement in the Queenstown-Lakes District of the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The settlement got its name from the local Scottish landowner Robert Wilkin and named after Cardrona in the Scottish Borders .

geography

The settlement is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Queenstown on the banks of the Cardrona River and on the Crown Range Road , which connects Wanaka and Queenstown .

history

The settlement was established during the gold rush in Otago in the 1860s. At that time, up to 5000 people lived in and around it. The former location is known for its striking hotel from the gold rush times, which is located on the other bank of the river, while only a few houses remain from the original location. Another historic building is the town hall and church, where the Cardrona Folk Music Festival takes place every year.

The Pub of Cardrona was an advertising campaign of the brewery Speight's of Dunedin known which also sells an eponymous beer brand. Speights has since built replicas of this pub in other parts of New Zealand, including Mount Eden in Auckland .

At the beginning of the 21st century, the place gained national and even international attention thanks to the Cardrona bra fence , which developed into a tourist attraction.

Sports

The international car hill climb Race to the Sky took place in Cardrona for several years . To the west of Cardrona is Mount Cardrona and the Cardrona Alpine Resort ski area . At the end of August and beginning of September 2017, Cardrona will be the station of the Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard World Cup 2017/18, as in the 2015/16 season .
