Wanaka , in Māori spelling : Wānaka , is a small town in the Queenstown-Lakes District of the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

Wanaka is located around 50 km northeast of Queenstown (70 kilometers by road) and 40 km north of Cromwell at the southern end of Lake Wanaka . The place encloses the Roys Bay of the lake. The only 3 km long New Zealand State Highway 84 ends in Wanaka , which connects the place to the New Zealand State Highway 6, connects Wanaka with Haast in the north on the west coast and in the south with Cromwell .

history

The settlement on Roys Bay was formed during the Otago gold rush and when gold was found in the Lindis River , a good 30 km southwest of Wanaka . During this time, forestry in particular boomed , as wood was urgently needed to expand the mines. After the gold rush it became quieter in town. Prohibition was imposed on the region from 1894 to 1922, but the locals bypassed it by going to partying and drinking alcohol on Ruby Island , a small island in Lake Wanaka .

Until 1940 Wanaka was known as Roys Bay or Pembroke , but was then renamed to its current name. Today the place is extremely strongly shaped by tourism .

population

For many years, Wanaka was a quiet place for summer vacationers, but the place became increasingly popular. The number of residents doubled from 1996 to 2006 to 5040. In the 2013 census, the city had 6,471 inhabitants, 28.4% more than in the 2006 census.

economy

The main source of income for the city is the tourism sector. But Wanaka is also known for wine growing in very good locations .

The Wanaka Sun

The Wanaka Sun is a local community newspaper with a weekly circulation of 15,000.
