Haast is a small town in the Westland District in the West Coast region on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The place was named after the German geologist, naturalist and explorer Julius von Haast , who gave his name to various geographic locations, plants and animals.

The place is a good 200 km southwest of Hokitika , on the south side of the Haast River , not far from its confluence with the Tasman Sea . Haast is divided into the three districts Haast Village or Township , Haast Beach , which is located directly on the coast, and Haast Junction , where the New Zealand State Highway 6 bends inland. The next largest city on the inland side is Wanaka and is located almost 100 km as the crow flies southeast of Haast. The place is connected by State Highway 6 with Hokitika in the north and Wanaka in the southeast.
history
The region has been settled by Europeans since the 1870s, but it wasn't until the 1960s that Haast was connected to the rest of New Zealand by paved roads. The place was founded between 1976 and 1979 after the old settlement, which was about 5 km further northwest and was used as a settlement for the workers of the Ministry of Works and Development , was abandoned.
Whale strandings
In 2017 and 2018 there were particularly many whale strandings on the coast of Haast.
Sightseeing
The New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) operates a visitor center at Haast Junction that provides visitors with information about the South West New Zealand World Heritage Area .
About 50 km southeast of Haast is the Haast Pass following State Highway 6 .
