The Haast River is a river in the regions of Otago and West Coast on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The river is named after the German geologist Julius von Haast .

geography

It initially runs in the Otago region, then in the West Coast region. Here, its entire middle course runs along the northern border of the Otago region and Mount Aspiring National Park. The river has its source in Mount Aspiring National Park north of the Haast Pass . This is the watershed to the Makarora River flowing south . The river is about 100 kilometers long and runs first in a northerly direction, later in a westerly and southwestern direction. It flows into the Tasman Sea about 3 kilometers northwest of Haast southeast of Haast Beach . Haast is the only town on the river.

The main tributary is the Landsborough River . Other right tributaries are Wills River, The Roaring Billy, Thomas River, left tributaries the Burke River and Macpherson Creek with Lake Barra. The grassy plains on the lower reaches are used as pastureland, the upper reaches are mountainous. The middle and lower reaches of the river are distinctly intertwined .

The New Zealand State Highway 6 follows almost the entire length of the river and has a bridge near the mouth just after Haast. With a length of 737 m, this is the longest single-lane and the seventh longest bridge in New Zealand.

use

The river is used for tourists with boats, and guided tours along the river are also offered. In the river is also brown trout and rainbow trout fishing and salmon.

The river often carries silt of glacial origin that comes from the glaciers of the Southern Alps . Most of the surrounding land is publicly owned and administered by the Department of Conservation . It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Te Wahipounamu .
