Holy Terror is an American speed metal band from North Hills ( California ).

history

In the summer of 1985 Kurt Colfelt left Agent Steel with the intention of starting his own band. The name was quickly determined for him: "Holy Terror" was a slang term for a problem child. Kurt also liked the religious undertone of the name.

In the following he looked for the members for his new band. He got the phone number of the drummer Jack Schwartz, who had recently been kicked out of Dark Angel . Kurt Colfelt called guitarist Floyd Flanary and invited him for a jam session . Jack Schwartz was a friend of guitarist Mike Alvord, who was also invited.

After a short time the four of them decided to look for a singer. An ad was placed in The Recycler magazine , to which Keith Deen, among others, answered. Kurt Colfelt first had to persuade him to join the band as a singer.

Now complete, the original line-up set about recording a demo tape. It contained four songs that Kurt Colfelt had essentially finished long before. They sent this recording to many labels and magazines and received positive feedback and even fan letters.

One day, one of the letters was one from the music label Music for Nations UK, where the band was offered a record deal . Jack Schwartz signed the contract immediately by phone without consulting the rest of the band. Kurt wanted to throw him out of the band, but Jack didn't want to leave. The situation escalated and Kurt slapped Jack on the nose, a step he later regretted.

Looking for a new drummer, they advertised in Music Connection magazine and got a response from Joe Mitchell. Six weeks later, the recording of Terror and Submission began , which was originally supposed to be called Holy Terror , but was renamed at the urging of the record company.

In the fall of 1987 the band went on tour in Europe with DRI .

After their return they continued working on Terror and Submission , the album was remixed but it still didn't sound like the band had wanted. The album was distributed in the UK by Music For Nations and in the US by Roadracer Records .

The follow-up Mind Wars was recorded in just 17 days. Due to a lack of financial resources, it was worked 17 to 20 hours a day because it reduced studio costs.

In the summer of 1988 the band went on tour through North America with DRI and Kreator . At the time, Kurt Colfelt had a big problem with drugs.

After this tour the band bought a bus to save money on rental vehicles, but the bus broke the first time it was used. The money to repair it was missing, so Kurt stayed behind with a roadie to get the bus running again himself. The rest of the band traveled on alone and played the gigs without Kurt. After a successful repair, he tried to catch up with the band again, but the bus caused more and more problems.

After this tour, the band opened four concerts for Motörhead . In the winter of 1988 they again toured Europe with Exodus and Nuclear Assault . At a concert in Germany, the drunk Keith Deen said in an interview that the band had signed a contract with Roadrunner Records. The journalist called Music for Nations to confirm this information. Since the tour itself was sponsored by Music for Nations , the band was excluded from further concerts. Kurt tried to solve the problem by phone, but after the last concert in Zurich they found their equipment on the street. A return flight was not possible as the tickets were not booked for a British airport until three weeks later .

The band really wanted to be back on the tour, so they rented a minibus and drove to Augsburg to borrow Kreator equipment. But when they got to a show, they just saw the replacement band play in their place. The tour manager attacked Kurt, who struggled and hit him in the face. The band fled the locality, shortly after the guitarist Mike Alvord said that he would leave the band because he was against violence.

The rest of the band spent two weeks in Munich in the minibus until Keith fell ill and it was decided to book a hotel room. After this time the band flew back to America at the expense of Kurt's girlfriend.
