Dirty Rotten Imbeciles , known as DRI , is a hardcore band from Houston, Texas .

DRI developed from a band known in the punk milieu (including a tour with the Dead Kennedys ), through the influence of elements from the music field of heavy metal , to one of the bands that had the most influence on the crossover . Musically they can be assigned to hardcore .

Band history

Early years

It was founded as "US-DRI" ("Us - Dirty Rotten Imbeciles") on May 2, 1982, but dropped the "US" after a few months. Two months after its formation, the band first appeared in Houston . Another four months later they recorded their songs in the studio and released them on the EP Dirty Rotten EP . The sound carrier attracted attention with its 22 songs with a total playing time of 18 minutes. With a circulation of only 1000 copies, the EP was quickly sold out. Demand led to the release of the songs in 12 " format as" Dirty Rotten LP "as early as 1983 .

Career high point

After releasing another EP in 1984 with Violent Pacification , they recorded their first LP in March 1985 under the title Dealing With It . Since the actual bassist Josh Pappe left the band for a short time during the recording, Mike Offender from MDC played the bass tracks together with the band's guitarist.

With the line-up of Kurt Brecht (vocals), Spike Cassidy (guitar), Josh Pappe (bass) and Felix Griffin (drums), the LP Crossover was recorded and released in 1987, and its popularity in the hardcore scene probably reached its peak she determined musically. The speed of the individual pieces corresponds to the hardcore genre, and the sound makes them sound a lot like metal . Therefore the album title corresponds to the character of the record. Tours of the United States and Europe followed. The subsequent studio album Four Of A Kind was listed in the Billboard charts at number 116 . After a subsequent European tour, Josh Pappe left the band and switched to Gang Green . With the albums released in the following years, the band did not manage to gain even greater popularity. With the 1992 album Definition , they could no longer clearly position themselves musically. After the album Full Speed Ahead, which was released in 1995, there was no further studio production.

today

The band is still active, and in addition to LP releases, a tour was planned for 2006. However, this tour had to be canceled because guitarist Spike Cassidy developed colon cancer . Cassidy has now successfully completed his rehab program. After his recovery, a tour for the band's 25th anniversary was planned for 2007, but this did not take place.

At the beginning of August 2009 the band published dates for performances within the USA, for the end of the year as well as for 2010. In 2012 there was a performance at the Wacken Open Air . The following year they went on a tour of the USA with the Suicidal Tendencies . In May of that year they played five concerts in Texas with the line-up of the LP Crossover .

Brecht, who is still a member of DRI, is now also involved in the thrash band Pasadena Napalm Division. During the band's early stages, Kurt Brecht began writing and publishing several self-published books. To date, the four titles "Notes From The Nest", "The 30-Day Diarrhea Diet Plan", "See The Loud Feeling" and "Whore Stories" have been published by Dirty Rotten Press . Brecht always mentions plans for future titles in interviews. "Notes ..." and "Whore Stories" were released as " Spoken Word " CD by Brecht .
