Metal Blade Records is an American music label based in Los Angeles , California .
The label primarily has metal bands under contract and also operates its own mail order business . It was founded in 1981 by Brian Slagel , who actually only wanted to release a compilation of several bands, but continued due to the success. The seat of Metal Blade Records Europe is in Göppingen , that of Metal Blade Records Japan in Tokyo .
history
Metal Blade's first LP was released in 1982 and was a compilation called Metal Massacre , on which Metallica also made its first appearance. The success of Metal Massacre prompted the label to release more samplers with this title. To date, 13 episodes have appeared. Some bands that have become famous through this series are Slayer , Voivod , Fates Warning and Metal Church . The first German band to sign with the label was Sacred Steel in 1997 .
