Metal massacre
Metal Massacre is a series of compilations by the American music label Metal Blade Records .
History of origin
Brian Slagel , founder of Metal Blade Records, worked in a Los Angeles record store in 1981 . At his request, he received permission from the owner to be able to offer imports such as the releases by Iron Maiden in addition to the albums from the USA . This additional offer met with keen interest from buyers, who made Slagel aware of the active metal scene in Los Angeles with bands such as Ratt , Malice and Steeler . A little later he founded a fanzine called The New Heavy Metal Revue and developed the idea of presenting this scene with a sampler called Metal Massacre .
Slagel, who meanwhile had very good contacts to the bands in Los Angeles, asked the groups he considered to be eligible whether they wanted to make a contribution. One of the prerequisites, however, was that they are not currently under contract with any music label , which is why Mötley Crüe was not represented on Metal Massacre I as originally planned. With borrowed money, Slagel had 5000 copies of Metal Massacre I pressed in 1982 , which sold out very quickly. Originally intended as a supplement to his fanzine, one of the distributors Slagel had the idea of bringing out Metal Massacre as a series. He should deliver the music, the distribution company would press and distribute the LPs. This is considered the initial spark for the establishment of the Metal Blade label.
Slagel got the ideas for possible bands for the first issues through tape trading and attending concerts. Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield of Metallica sent Slagel a demo of Hit the Lights , on the Lloyd Grant, a young Jamaican guitar player who had responded to a newspaper ad played, nor the guitar solos, though Mustaine was already in the band. The reason was that Hetfield and Ulrich found Grant's solos simply better. In 1983 he saw Slayer as the opening act for Bitch and was so overwhelmed that he was the first band to get them on the third edition of the sampler. The bands whose success is based on a contribution to the sampler also include Armored Saint , Voivod or Fates Warning .
Since then, a total of 14 samplers have been released under the name Metal Massacre , the last so far in 2016.

- Cold Day in Hell by Steeler has been replaced by Chains around Heaven by Black 'n Blue from the 2nd edition .
- Tell the World by Ratt was removed from the song list from the 3rd edition.
- The version of Metallica's Hit the Lights contained in the 1st edition differs from that of all other editions: while Lloyd Grant on the version of the first edition as lead guitarist alongside James Hetfield , who took over vocals, rhythm guitar and bass, and drummer Lars Ulrich can be heard, Dave Mustaine played the lead guitar and Ron McGovney the bass for the version that has been included since the 2nd edition .
- For the 2nd edition, a different front cover was used compared to the original LP: Instead of the cover design by Elaine Offers, the 2nd edition only features the Metal Massacre lettering in black on a gray background. From the 3rd edition, however, the original cover was used again.
- The US heavy metal band Steeler, which was founded in 1981 and is included in the 1st edition of this compilation, should not be confused with the German heavy metal band Steeler , u. a. with Axel Rudi Pell on guitar. This American band was founded by singer Ron Keel . After recording the single Cold Day in Hell , the well-known Swedish guitarist Yngwie J. Malmsteen also joined the band.
- The American heavy metal band Avatar included here should not be confused with the American power metal band Avatar, which was founded in 1979 and later renamed itself to Savatage . Co-producer John Kornarens (listed under the name Anthony Kornarens) played guitar parts and his sister Diane Kornarens played the bass of the instrumental Octave .
- Metallica was listed on the 1st edition under the wrong name Mettallica.

- The bundle Metal Massacre 8 & 9 contains all the songs from Metal Massacre VIII but only six out of ten songs from Metal Massacre Nine : On the CD edition, the songs from Metal Massacre VIII take positions 1 to 12, the six songs from Metal Massacre Nine positions 13 to 18. In the MC edition of the bundle, the first ten songs from Metal Massacre VIII can be found on side A and the last two songs from Metal Massacre VIII and the six songs from Metal Massacre Nine on side B.
- The song Old World Nites by Oliver Magnum is (as on the MC edition of Metal Massacre Nine ) printed under the false name Old World Nights .
- Since some songs had to be deleted from the track list due to the limited playing time of a CD to about 74 minutes at the time, the Bundle Metal Massacre 8 & 9 is probably the most questionable release in the history of the Metal Massacre series. The question arises why Metal Massacre VIII and Metal Massacre Nine were not, like all the other Metal Massacre compilations re-released in 1994, in their entirety on a CD, but only in this case the procedure, two Bundling compilations on a CD was applied.
- Further explanations can be found under the descriptions of Metal Massacre VIII and Metal Massacre Nine .

The Best Of Metal Massacre
In addition to the Metal Massacre compilations, bundles and box sets, Metal Blade Records also released a best-of in 1988 and 1989 under the name The Best of Metal Massacre . This best-of compilation was released as LP, MC and CD, which ultimately resulted in a peculiarity: Metal Blade Records made full use of the playing time for all three formats. This resulted in three different track lists: eleven songs were pressed on the LP edition, 16 songs on the CD edition and 18 songs on the MC edition.
