Faith or Fear is an American thrash metal band formed in Richland , New Jersey , in 1982 .

history

The band was formed in 1982 at a school in Richland, New Jersey, by guitarists Chris Bombeke, Bob Perna and drummer Dan Hansen. Together they played some local gigs and covered songs like Southern Man by Crosby, Stills and Nash or Deep Purple .

It wasn't until 1985 that Hansen and Bombeke met again by chance in a parking lot in Vineland , New Jersey. Together with Chris Perna, they played a few cover versions of Metallica and Dokken again in his house . The band first called themselves Maggot , then changed their name to Maggot Vomit . The line-up consisted of Chris Bombeke, Bob Perna, Dan Hansen, Carlo Gentilleti (electric bass) and Tim Blackman (vocals). In September 1985, Hansen had to leave the band to study at university and could only see the band on weekends. In addition, Clarence "CJ" Jenkins, a new bass player, joined the band.

In 1986 the band went to an Anvil Bitch concert in Philadelphia . As a result, the band decided not to keep their previous style and to write more aggressive, faster pieces. The result was the song The Reducer . This song never made it onto an album, but became the intro to Darkside . Performances followed with Anvil Bitch, Nuclear Assault , Hallows Eve , Flotsam and Jetsam and Crumbsuckers . Towards the end of 1987 the band took up the demo Dehumanize and released it in 1988. The title song also appeared on the compilation Metal Massacre IX . Although Rich Lohwasser was specified as the drummer on the demo, Dan Hansen could still be heard as the drummer on the recordings. Two nights after a concert with Flotsam and Jetsam, Hansen had left the band. Rich Lohwasser, a friend of Anvil Bitch, temporarily replaced him. The label recorded Lohwasser on the demo as a drummer in order not to make the band appear unstable.

The deal with Combat Records resulted in their first and only album called Punishment Area . The Punish-the-World tour followed together with  Sepultura . The band also took part in the live concert video Ultimate Revenge 2 , along with bands like Raven , Dark Angel and Death . Bob Perna got out of the band and was replaced by Merritt Gant (later working for Overkill ). Rich Lohwasser also left the band and was replaced. The strong changes in the lineups initially led to the end of the band in 1991.

In December 2002 Chris Bombeke took up contact with the other members again. In January 2003 they rehearsed the first pieces with the original line-up from December 9, 1987. Since then they have played together again and again and had a performance on August 23, 2003 in Buena , New Jersey. The performance was also recorded, but not yet released on DVD.

In 2008 the band reached a contract with Lost & Found Records . In 2009 the compilation Instruments of Death was released, a collection of previously unreleased or newly recorded material. Clarence "CJ" Jenkins died in September 2009 while performing. Bassist Bob Perna replaced Jenkins.

The band plays classic thrash metal. On their Myspace page, the band lists Motörhead , Exodus , Cro-Mags , Crumbsuckers, DRI , The Exploited , English Dogs , Suicidal Tendencies , Possessed and the early works of Death Angel , Metallica and Megadeth .
