Death ( Engl. , Death ') was a death metal band from Tampa , Florida , United States . Death are often named alongside Possessed as the forefathers of Death Metal, whose influence extends to this day in Extreme Metal . The style of the band continued to develop under Chuck Schuldiner . From raw and fast Death Metal of the early days to technically demanding Technical Death Metal with elements from Progressive Metal . After the early death of Schuldiner due to a brain tumor , the band broke up in 2001.
Band history
In 1983, at the age of 16 , Chuck Schuldiner founded the band Mantas together with Rick Rozz and Kam Lee . At first, drummer Lee was responsible for the vocals, but in the following year Schuldiner took over the position of the microphone as well as the guitar . Death by Metal was recorded in the summer of 1984 . The first songs "sound brutal and raw, are noisy, but also have a rousing groove and are inseparable part of the foundation of Death Metal". After the recordings, Mantas was disbanded, but shortly afterwards, Schuldiner reformed it as Death. Until 1985 the formation did not have a permanent bass player, which is why Schuldiner also took on this task on the first demo recordings. However, Lee and Rozz left Death that same year and formed their own band, Massacre . The band's other instruments also became orphaned over the course of the year.
After interludes of various guest musicians took Schuldiner in 1987 almost completely on their own - only supported by drummer Chris Reifert - the first Death - album Scream Bloody Gore on. Scream Bloody Gore was compared to Possessed , conversely, Possessed's 1985 debut album Seven Churches was also seen as influenced by the Death demos. Possessed singer Jeff Becerra wrote in an interview with the Tales of the Macabre : “Chuck was just as inspired by me as I was by him. We are inspired by Motörhead and Exodus at first, but then it was free for all. We're just trying to make music. "
In the same year, Reifert left the band to form Autopsy , so Schuldiner brought Rozz back, who brought his bandmates from Massacre, drummer Bill Andrews and bassist Terry Butler (later Six Feet Under ), with him. In 1988 the album Leprosy was recorded in this line-up . In 1989 Rozz was fired and replaced by James Murphy ( Agent Steel , Hallows Eve , later Cancer , Obituary and Testament ), and the CD Spiritual Healing was released.
The subsequent tour turned into a fiasco . Without Schuldiner's consent and involvement, the rest of the band went on a European tour with a guest singer, which resulted in the former firing the latter and gathering new musicians around him in 1991. His choice fell on drummer Sean Reinert , guitarist Paul Masvidal (both from Cynic ) and bassist Steve DiGiorgio ( Sadus ). Masvidal and DiGiorgio had already occasionally stepped in for Death . The 1991 album Human was recorded with this line-up. A new phase in the band's development began when Schuldiner's horror lyrics were replaced by more profound, sometimes philosophical considerations that were later typical of the band in the 1990s. In the course of his development, Schuldiner also distanced himself from his early albums and declared that he no longer liked and wanted to play them, with which he disappointed some fans. Eric Daniels of Asphyx called Schuldiner because of his attitude as a "wimp" and "sissy" ( Engl. As for wimp ), although he was a great musician.
But this occupation also did not last. On the 1993 album Individual Thought Patterns , only Schuldiner was left with DiGiorgio from the previous line-up. The drums were taken over by Gene Hoglan (ex- Dark Angel , now Testament), for whom his work at Death became a career springboard, the second guitar was played by King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRocque .
The sixth album, Symbolic (1995), was also released with a different line-up. Only Hoglan was left next to Schuldiner; The new bassist was Kelly Conlon , and the second guitar was taken over by Schuldiner's high school friend Bobby Koelbe . After Symbolic met an extremely mixed reception, Schuldiner put Death on hold to devote himself to his power metal project Control Denied . Conlon went to Monstrosity , and Hoglan became the drummer on Strapping Young Lad .
In 1998, Schuldiner brought guitarist Shannon Hamm , bassist Scott Clendenin and drummer Richard Christy from Control Denied to record the last Death album, The Sound of Perseverance . The influence of Power Metal cannot be ignored; It becomes abundantly clear in the form of the cover version of Judas Priest's song Painkiller, which is included as a bonus track on the CD . After the tour that followed, Schuldiner was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1999 . Like many other US citizens, Schuldiner did not have health insurance , so that, given his modest financial situation, his recovery was poor.
In 1999 the only Control Denied album The Fragile Art of Existence was released , on which Schuldiner expanded the power metal influence and also added progressive elements to the songs. However, the band never performed live. Schuldiner got around to writing and recording new control denied material, but his condition steadily deteriorated. Despite large-scale donation campaigns (also in Germany through the music magazine Rock Hard ) and charity events (including by the befriended band Testament, in whose ranks two musicians were also suffering from cancer) the money was no longer enough at the end of 2001. After Schuldiner was released from the hospital because of this, he died just an hour later on December 13, 2001 at the age of 34 of complications from his cancer .
Drummer Christy then played together with bassist DiGiorgio on Iced Earth . He worked for a few years on the radio show hosted by Howard Stern and then founded Charred Walls of the Damned with Steve DiGiorgio , Tim "Ripper" Owens and Jason Suecof, among others . In 2004 two CDs with control denied demos and old death live recordings were released under the title Zero Tolerance and Zero Tolerance II .
In 2011 The Sound of Perseverance was remixed and re-released with a new cover. The same applies to Human , which was reissued in the middle of the year. The remixed album Individual Thought Patterns followed in October .
On March 24, 2015, the death of the last bassist Scott Clendenin was announced. He struggled with health problems for a long time, but it is unclear whether these were responsible for his death.
