Cancer is a British thrash and death metal band formed in Telford , Shropshire in 1988 .

history

The band was formed in 1988 by Carl Stokes (drums), John Walker (electric guitar, vocals) and Ian Buchanan (electric bass). Together they rehearsed a few pieces and recorded the demo No Fuckin Cover Demo . They sent this to various labels and signed a contract with Vinyl Solution . After that they developed more pieces and played together with bands like Bomb Disneyland , Bolt Thrower , Cerebral Fix and GBH .

In the winter of 1989 they recorded the first album called To the Gory End , which was released in April 1990. The album was indexed in Germany by the Federal Testing Office for Writings Harmful to Young People because of its cover, which depicted a motif from the film Zombie , and for a time was only available with a neutral black cover. The release was followed by a tour with Obituary and Deicide . In February 1991 the band traveled to Florida to record the second album Death Shall Rise . James Murphy was the lead guitarist. The album was released in the winter of 1991 shortly after touring Europe . This was followed by more tours and an appearance at the Milwaukee Metal Festival .

After six months, James Murphy left the band and was replaced by Baz Savage. Tours through Israel , Mexico , America and Europe followed. The third album, called Sins of Mankind , was recorded in December 1992. More tours followed. The album was released in June 1993. In 1994, the band split from Vinyl Solution, signed to East West Records and recorded the album Black Faith . A tour through Europe followed. After the album was released, the band broke up.

Towards the end of 2003, John Walker and Carl Strokes met to re-form the band. Ian Buchanan did not rejoin the band, so bassist Adam Richardson took his place, Rob Engvikson played lead guitar. Together they took on the EP Corporation $ . This was released on May 17, 2004 via Copro Records .

The band released the album Spirit in Flames on Copro Records in 2005 . In 2006 the band broke up, but in 2013 they reformed again and consisted of the classic line-up consisting of Walker, Stokes, Buchanan and Savage. In July 2014 the group performed at the Hell's Pleasure festival in Pößneck .

style

Cancer play technically demanding Thrash and Death Metal. The speed of the pieces is variable. Their style is compared to that of bands like Atheist , Death , Cynic and Celtic Frost .
