Paião is a municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal and belongs to the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz .

history

The current municipality was given to the abbot Paio Viegas by Portugal's first king, Dom Afonso Henriques in 1175, and then came to the Seiça monastery . King Sancho I enlarged the municipality, which later together with Lavos , most recently after the Liberal Revolution in Portugal in 1822, formed an independent circle (concelho). In 1853 the circle was dissolved and joined that of Figueira da Foz. Paião became an independent municipality in the Figueira da Foz district in 1900. At the time, the community experienced a relative economic boom after some upper-class citizens settled here and invested in trade, small industry and agriculture. The place was best known for its tailors, 30 of whom were still working here in the 1960s. In 1989 Paião was elevated to vila .

The decaying Seiça Monastery is located in the municipality, but is not open to the public. Storks nest on the towers of the building, which has not been used for a long time. The nearby Capela de Nossa Senhora de Seiça , built for the first time in 850 and rebuilt in 1602, with its azulejos and paintings can be visited. The chapel, which has a rare octagonal shape, was renovated in 2009. Between the monastery and the chapel every year on August 14th and 15th, the popular Feira de Seiça is the oldest market in the Coimbra district, where handicrafts, folk dances and customs, but also light music and traditional gastronomy are shown or offered, along with a series of market stalls. On the penultimate weekend in July, the festival of Nossa Senhora da Graça (English: Our Lady of Grace) is also celebrated there. a. with a procession.

In 2005, a monument to the tailors (Portuguese: Alfaiate) of the town was inaugurated at Largo do Alvideiro in Paião with the Homenagem ao Alfaiate . The local government also maintains an indoor swimming pool and other sports facilities.

The parish church Igreja Paroquial do Paião was built between 1896 and 1905, partly using the simple church that has stood here since 1601. Some stone representations of saints were carried over from the old to the new church, but the largest ones were moved from Bayonne in France , such as those on the main altar. Some decorative elements are said to originally come from the Seiça Monastery.
