history

There is insufficient evidence about the origins of today's settlement. It is documented as part of the lands of the lords of the Quinta da Foja in the neighboring municipality of Santana , who belonged to an order of the Santa Cruz Monastery from Coimbra and who had farmed the property since 1185. The wide, flat landscape favored stronger winds for the operation of the windmills, and the various tributaries of the Mondego flowing through the municipality made the operation of water mills possible.

It was not until 1997 that the independent municipality of Moinhos da Gândara was created by separating it from the area of the municipality of Alhadas .

Culture, sports and sights

In the village of Quinta dos Vigários, the municipality runs an outdoor swimming pool, the Piscína . With the Parque da Tapada in Casal dos Chouriços, it offers a small leisure and recreation park, and in Ribas it also has a sports hall and a multi-purpose hall.

In the second half of August, the town celebrates every year in Ribas the feast of the parish patron saint Nossa Senhora da Saúde (dt .: Our Lady of Health), a common name in Portugal variant of Mary -Verehrung. On the 19th of each month, there is also the municipality's market, where products and gastronomy of local traditions are offered. Also medieval markets are held here from time to time.

Various nature trails and hiking trails are laid out along the old windmills and water mills, some of which can be walked with a guide. Among the mills that can be visited, the Moinho do Rodrigues in Quinta dos Vigários is the only mill that is still active today.

Various associations also take care of the cultural and sporting life in the community, such as the Associação Cultural Recreativa e Desportiva da Gândara (German: cultural, leisure and sports association of Gândara), with its activities particularly in the areas of sport and folk dance ( Rancho Folclórico ), the Associação Cívica de Defesa dos Moinhos e do Ambiente (German about: Association for the preservation of mills and the environment), the carrier pigeon association Rapid Wings (orig .: Grupo Columbófilo "Asas Rápidas" ), and various youth -Music groups.
