Santana is a place and a former municipality in Portugal .

geography

Located in the very east of the Figueira district, the area of the municipality of Santana is mainly determined by the wide rice fields that extend to the Mondego and some landscape elevations and forest areas.

history

Human settlement can be documented as far back as the Iron Age , and the Phoenicians also left traces. Today's Santana has been occupied since the 18th century, while the extensive Quinta da Foja estate in what is now the municipality has been managed by members of the Santa Cruz Monastery in Coimbra since 1185 . In the course of the dissolution of all church orders and the nationalization of their property after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the property became state property in 1834 after the Miguelistenkrieg and has been privately owned since its auction in 1838.

In 1988 the area was detached from the municipality of Ferreira-a-Nova and became an independent administrative area. In connection with the reorganization of the administrative structure of Portugal , the municipality of Santana was dissolved again in 2013 and re-incorporated into the municipality of Ferreira-a-Nova.

Culture and sights

The Sociedade Musical Recreativa Instrutiva Santanense was founded in 1894 and is an important factor in the cultural life in the former municipality, especially with its orchestra called Filarmónica de Santana and the attached music school. The club has about 200 members and is also a partner of the leisure organization Inatel in orchestral events in Figueira. With the folk dance association Associação Rosas de Maio and the youth club AJAAR , other associations are culturally active in the village.

On the square in the center of Santana, at Largo de Santa Ana , is the small church Capela de Santa Ana . The year of the last renovation is named above its portal with the inscription "1896". It was originally built in 1646 and expanded in 1766. A sculpture of St. Anne from the 17th century is worth seeing. Every year in the first week of August there is a parish festival in honor of Saint Ana.

In addition to the Quinta da Foja, in which u. a. a wellness hotel is also operated, the archaeological excavation site Santa Olaia is the second listed building in Santana. Located on a hill on the A14 near the town of Monte de Ferrestelo, the remains of a human settlement that date back to the Iron Age can be seen here . The chapel Capela de Santa Eulália is also located on the hill, from which one has a wide view over the rice fields and the wooded hills of the area. Every year on July 24th there is a procession to the chapel.

The Mata Nacional de Foja is a forest area of 372.56 hectares, near the village of Foja, which is designated as a protected forest by the nature conservation authority ICNF ( Instituto de Conservação da Natureza e da Floresta ) with its population mainly of pine , cork oak and eucalyptus .

administration

Santana was the seat of a parish of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz , in the Coimbra district . On June 30, 2011, the community had 1,058 inhabitants on an area of 15.1 km².

In the course of the municipal reorganization of Portugal in 2013 , the municipality of Santana was dissolved and incorporated into the municipality of Ferreira-a-Nova .

traffic

The municipality can be reached via the A14 motorway (Montemor-o-Novo / Este exit ) and the A17 (Quiaios exit), as well as the IC1 (national road 109).

Until the suspension of the Ramal da Figueira da Foz in 2009, the former municipality had a railway connection through its common station with Ferreira-a-Nova . The completion of the renovation work and the reopening of the line have been postponed until further notice in view of the country's financial crisis.

economy

Agriculture only plays a subordinate role. In the former municipality, administration, commerce, childcare and care for the elderly create some job opportunities. The majority of the population finds employment in businesses in the trade and industry in the Figueira district.

In 2006, a sewage treatment plant (ETAR) was built in Santana with an investment totaling almost 2 million euros, as part of the water supply systems of Santana and its neighboring communities.
