Vila Verde is a municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal and belongs to the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz .

geography

5 km from the city center of Figueira da Foz, and inland on the Mondego , the municipality is characterized by the wetlands on the north bank of the river, but also by trees and agricultural areas, especially the wide rice fields. The area is mostly flat, interrupted by a few hills on which the villages are located. In the direction of Figueira da Foz, towards the municipality of São Julião , the increasingly closed urban development is already beginning . Together with São Julião, São Pedro , Tavarede and Buarcos , Vila Verde represents the urban part of Figueiras.

history

The Museum Museu Municipal Santos Rocha in Figueira exhibits the finds with which the archaeologist António dos Santos Rocha (1853–1910) documented the settlement of the area as far back as the Paleolithic .

The community was first mentioned historically on February 16, 1096, when the abbot D. Pedro assigned the areas Fontanela (today Fontela) and S.Veríssimo (today Vila Verde) to the episcopal property of Coimbra .

After the area had long been administered from Montemor-o-Velho , it was assigned to Figueira da Foz in 1782. In 1790 the area was also separated from the parishes of S. Julião and Alhadas and became an independent church community. From 1821 it was assigned to the administrative district (concelho) of Figueira da Foz, on the initiative of a group of citizens, including Manuel Fernandes Tomás . In 1919 the municipality became an independent administrative unit in the district, as '' Freguesia de Vila Verde ''.

Culture, sports and sights

The parish church (Igreja Paroquial) is dedicated to Saint Santo Aleixo and houses, in addition to various portraits of saints, a bell from 1783.

In 1995 a column with four human figures was erected in the village of Quinta das Recolhidas , representing the four traditionally important professions of the community, namely the miller (moleiro), the farmer (agricultor), the glassblower (vidreiro), and the saltworker (Salineiro).

Of the 34 windmills that were once located in the municipal area, only one is still in operation, but the shutdown is already under discussion.

The sports club Ginásio Clube Figueirense maintains its rowing center on Mondego in the municipality.

The once very popular racing cyclist Alves Barbosa was born in Fontela , a town in the municipality of Vila Verde, in 1931 .

administration

Vila Verde is the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz , in the Coimbra district . On June 30, 2011 the community had 2898 inhabitants on an area of 17.3 km².

The following localities are in the municipality of Vila Verde:

  • Salmanha
  • Fontela
  • Vila Verde
  • Ervidinho
  • Lares
  • Feteira
  • Caceira
Fontela train station

traffic

With the stops Fontela and Fontela A, the municipality has two stops on the Linha do Oeste , and with the Lares train station (also Bifurcação de Lares ) the first common stop where the Linha de Oeste and the Ramal da Figueira da Foz meet.

The community is on the A14 motorway , with its own exit.

economy

Fishing, agriculture (rice, vegetables) and salt production are traditionally the most important economic sectors in the municipality, but have lost their importance, in favor of businesses primarily in the textile, logistics, leisure and gastronomy industries. The Saint-Gobain Mondego SA glass factory , the former Vidreira da Fontela founded in 1920 , has been a local company of the French Compagnie de Saint-Gobain since 2002 . There is also a thermal power station in the municipality, in Lares.
