António dos Santos Rocha (born April 30, 1853 in Figueira da Foz , † March 28, 1910 ibid) was a Portuguese archaeologist .

Career

He finished his law degree at Coimbra University in 1875 . He then worked as a lawyer, but increasingly devoted himself to archeology, primarily in the Figueira district, but also in other areas of the Beiras , in the Alentejo and the Algarve . The most important archaeological find here is Santa Olaia .

On May 6, 1894, the Municipal Museum (today Museu Municipal Santos Rocha ) was opened by Figueira da Foz, on the initiative of a group of intellectuals from the city led by Rocha, who became the first director of the museum. In 1898 Rocha founded the archaeological society Sociedade Arqueológica da Figueira da Foz with some like-minded people , and he was elected president. In 1903 it was renamed Sociedade Arqueológica Santos Rocha . Its statutes set out the company's goals very precisely. It should conduct research and excavations, organize the appropriate collection, and acquire and preserve the finds. In addition, the society undertook to publicize the results of its work and to engage in exchange with the scientific community at home and abroad. The collection can be found in today's Museu Municipal Dr. Santos Rocha in Figueira da Foz can be visited.

Santos Rocha is considered one of the pioneers of scientific archaeological research in Portugal.
