The Museu Municipal Santos Rocha (Eng .: Municipal Museum Santos Rocha) is a museum in the Portuguese coastal town of Figueira da Foz .

history

The main entrance to the museum

It was opened on May 6, 1894 on the initiative of the archaeologist António dos Santos Rocha . His collection and that of the archaeological society he founded in 1898 formed the basis of the growing museum archive. The museum had made its first marriage public in regular publications by the museum until around the death of its founder in 1910, who was an important archaeologist who promoted the exchange of knowledge and research nationally and internationally.

After it was founded, the museum was temporarily housed in the Casa do Paço until it moved to the town hall, the Paços do Concelho , in 1899 . The steadily growing collection, especially the increasing holdings of sculptures and paintings from 1945 on , made it necessary to have its own premises. In 1976, for example, the museum moved to the current building, which the Gulbenkian Foundation built in 1975 and was designed by the architect José Isaías Cardoso .

In 1993 the museum was named the best museum of the year by the Portuguese Museological Society ( Associação Portuguesa de Museologia ).

In 2003, two new museums were opened that are affiliated to it as branches of the Museu Municipal Santos Rocha, namely the Maritime Museum ( Núcleo Museológico do Mar ) in Buarcos and the Saltworks Museum ( Núcleo Museológico do Sal , also Ecomuseu ) in Lavos .
