history

Buarcos around 1625, print by Daniel Meisner

The name probably goes back to the Arabic Buadtharque . It was known as Bulharcos before independence , but in the estate of King Dom Afonso Henriques († 1185) it was already noted as Buarcos . Buarcos received its first town charter ( foral ) from King Dom Afonso IV in 1342. In 1516 King Dom Manuel I renewed town charter . In the course of the 16th and 17th centuries, Buarcos was repeatedly a victim of piracy , so that the place was fortified towards the Atlantic Ocean to protect it. In the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 on November 1, 1755, Buarcos also suffered many fatalities and material damage.

In 1834 British troops under Charles John Napier landed here on the side of the Liberals in the Miguelistenkrieg .

In 1836 the Buarcos district, which had existed independently since 1342, was incorporated into the Figueira da Foz district.

Culture and sights

nature

The sandy beach of Buarcos is the most famous attraction for visitors. The city beach of Figueira, Praia da Claridade , merges seamlessly into the beach of Buarcos, which in turn is only separated from the sandy beach of Praia de Quiaios , which continues to the north, by Cabo Mondego .

Buarcos is located below the wooded Serra da Boa Viagem with its hiking and cycling trails, the climbing park, excursion restaurants and viewpoints.

Museums and theaters

Here you will find the Núcleo Museológico do Mar (German: Marine Museum), a three-part museum exhibition on the fishing history of Buarcos and Figueira.

The Teatro Caras Direitas , founded in 1907 , has also operated cinemas in his house since 1926, in addition to numerous cultural activities. The interior of the Teatro Trindade , opened in 1910, is a curious copy of the Lisbon Teatro da Trindade , shows neo-Romanueline features on the outside and, in addition to its diverse cultural activities, is also home to the União Football de Buarcos sports club . An application for classification as a monument (IIP) is pending.

The preserved fortifications Fortaleza de Buarcos and Fortim de Palheiros are protected architectural monuments as Imóvel de Interest Público (IIP).

Churches and stakes

The Capela de Nossa Sra da Conceição from the 16th century is kept simple on the outside and contains a gold-leaf high altar, winding columns and wall azulejos from the 18th century. The most valuable items of equipment, however, are likely to have been lost when it was looted by English pirates in 1602. (IIP)

The single-nave church Igreja da Misericórdia , founded by Manuel I in the 16th century, preserves a. a. still the original portal, wall azulejos, altar and baptismal font, but were partially redesigned in the 18th century, such as the outer front. (IIP)

The Capela da Nossa Senhora da Encanação was built in the 17th century, but several extensive renovations have been made over the years . It houses the statue of the Virgin Mary Senhora do Mar , the patron saint of fishermen. Every year on September 8th, a nocturnal procession with the figure begins here.

The Pelourinho de Buarcos stake was erected in 1561. One side of its two-sided decorations is already heavily worn by the weather. It is registered as an architectural monument (IIP), as is the Pelorinho de Redondos . It was also built in 1561 in the then independent municipality of Redondos, which was merged into Buarcos in 1794.
